A former member of the hardcore punk band Turnstile has been arrested and is accused of trying to run over his neighbor and the father of the Grammy-winning group's lead singer, Brendan Yates, police in Maryland said.
Former guitarist Brady O’Brien Ebert, 33, was arrested in Silver Spring, Maryland, on March 31, the Montgomery Police Department confirmed in an April 2 news release. He has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with a hit-and-run on Sunday, March 29, that left a 78-year-old neighbor hospitalized with serious injuries, including a broken leg.
The victim has been identified as William Yates, the father of the Turnstile frontman and Ebert's neighbor, according to the The New York Times and the , citing charging documents. In August 2022, Turnstile announced Ebert's exit from the band on their Instagram Story, saying, "We are deeply grateful for our time together" and "Our love for him continues and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward," Pitchfork reported.
Montgomery Police said the entire hit-and-run incident was captured on a neighbor's security camera. Ebert is being held at the Montgomery County detention center without bail, awaiting his preliminary hearing on May 1, jail records state.
Ebert's attorney declined USA TODAY's request for comment.
Turnstile singer's father says ex-member yelled he 'deserved it'
Charging documents say William Yates spotted a vehicle heading toward his daughter and his grandchildren on their driveway Sunday afternoon while honking the horn, the Times and AP reported. Yates rushed to the driveway when Ebert allegedly swerved the vehicle toward him during the incident and struck him.
William Yates told police that he threw a rock at the back door of Ebert's car in an effort to get him "away from his family so they could all get into the house," per the Times. His daughter, Erin Gerber, dragged her three-year-old son onto the front lawn when the vehicle approached the driveway.

William Yates also said that while he waited on the ground for an ambulance, Ebert returned to the home to yell that he "deserved it," the Times reported. William Yates told authorities that Ebert had been "causing issues" since his exit from Turnstile in 2022.
In a prior incident on March 13, Ebert allegedly pulled up his vehicle toward William Yates in the neighborhood to yell obscenities at him before making a three-point turn and driving toward him at a high speed, William Yates told investigators, according to the Times. Ebert then allegedly gave him the middle finger and narrowly missed hitting him with the vehicle.
Documents state that Ebert returned a few days later to William Yates' house to yell obscenities at his wife and a friend who were sitting outside.
