Patriots legend not ruling out team taking unexpected route at WR

Who will be the odd man out in the New England Patriots' wide receivers room?

That has been a lingering question throughout the spring practices with the recent additions of three-time All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown and veteran standout Romeo Doubs.

The Patriots carried six receivers on the roster last season. However, they could potentially find themselves in a situation where seven players are good enough to make the team this year. Along with Brown and Doubs, the team still has DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III. And despite being assumed as the odd man out, Kayshon Boutte is also still on the roster.

Patriots legend Troy Brown didn't dismiss the idea of seven receivers being on the roster, especially if every guy can play.

"Seven is a nice number when all the guys can play," said Brown, via ESPN's Mike Reiss. "When you have a room like that, most of the good ones know when they come in for training camp they have to turn it up. So, it could create a whole another beast in that room."

So much can happen between now and the regular season.

Perhaps one of the seven receivers falls off a cliff when the pads come on, and the practices intensify. Injuries will always be a possibility as well. One thing is certain: this will be one of the scrappiest training camps at the wide receiver position the Patriots have seen in years.

And the team will be all the better for it.
