Mason West involved in blockbuster WHL trade

Michigan State hockey got a massive recruiting win when it landed the commitment of Mason West. A 6-foot-6 forward from Edina, Minnesota, West was selected with the 29th pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.

A 2007-born player, after wrapping up his career with Edina High School, West spent the last year with the Fargo Force of the USHL. It is unclear if West is expected in East Lansing for 2026-27 or the 2027-28 season, although signs point to him joining the Spartans this upcoming season.

A contingency trade has been made, though, and if things don't work out for West in East Lansing, he will have a home in the Western Hockey League. The Portland Winterhawks have received the rights to West in exchange for a first and seventh round draft pick, which was acquired by the Vancouver Giants.

For Spartan fans, the hope is that West never needs to play in the WHL and is in East Lansing this fall.
