Home Improvement was known for family fun, but had serious episodes that tackled bigger issues

In season 5, episode 22, titled "The Longest Day," the Taylor family awaits test results that could reveal a serious problem with Randy's health

Fans have applauded Jonathan Taylor Thomas's acting in the serious episode

Home Improvement was often recognized for bringing the laughs, but one serious episode stands out to fans, three decades later.

A season 5 episode titled "The Longest Day," which aired in March 1996, follows the Taylor family through what starts as an average day, as Jill takes the three boys to a routine checkup. When the four return home, however, there's a mention of a second blood test for Randy (played by Jonathan Taylor Thomas).

When Randy leaves the room, Jill informs Tim that Randy needed a second blood test because the doctor was concerned after feeling a lump on his thyroid gland. While they were assured the lumps are "usually benign," the parents' concern is palpable as they await more information.

Jill also explains to Tim that she didn't explain the situation to Randy because she didn't want to worry him until "we know what we're dealing with." The possibilities outlined to her were a goiter, hypothyroidism or cancer.

The two agree that the news is their "worst nightmare," compounded by the fact they'd have to wait 24 hours for lab results. They try to keep things as normal as possible, but end up catering to Randy, leading him to joke, "If I didn't know any better, I'd think I was dying."

Jill's haunted reaction leads Randy to ask more questions about whether it was related to the second blood test he took, at which point Jill decides to tell him the truth.

Randy is obviously shaken by the news, but leaves hastily to go to school. When he doesn't show up at home later, Tim finds him in the arcade, where his frustrated son shares his disappointment that Jill and Tim didn't tell him he could potentially have cancer.

Tearfully, Randy asks Tim, "Why does this bad stuff always have to happen to me?" after Jill mentioned in a previous conversation with Wilson that Randy has had health problems that haven't impacted any of her other kids.

"I don't want to die," he tells his dad, who reassures him that even if the results are the worst-case scenario, it's a "treatable" form of cancer.

When the call finally comes in, they learn that Randy doesn't have cancer and won't need an operation, but does have hypothyroidism and will need medication for the rest of his life.

The unexpected episode of the series ended up being its highest-rated of season 5 and one of the highest-rated episodes of the show's overall run. Thomas's acting in the episode was also applauded.

By the early 2000s, Thomas pulled back from Hollywood, leaving Home Improvement early and winding down his acting roles. He attended Harvard, Columbia and St. Andrew’s University in Scotland, and relished his time as a student.

“I’d been going nonstop since I was 8 years old,” he told PEOPLE in 2013. “I wanted to go to school, to travel and have a bit of a break...To sit in a big library amongst books and students, that was pretty cool,” said Thomas. “It was a novel experience for me.”
