Ryan Hurst is set to play Kratos in 'God of War'. -

Prime Video announced in 2022 that a God of War series adaptation was in the works

Star Trek producer Robert D. Moore signed on as showrunner in 2024 and has promised to "emulate the tone of the game"

Prime Video added another game adaptation to its lineup — and this one is extra brutal.

In December 2022, the streamer greenlit a series based on God of War, a 20-year-old PlayStation franchise about Kratos, a Spartan warrior who trades his soul to Ares, the Greek god of war, in exchange for victory in battle. The show will focus on the two most recent games in the series, which introduced his 10-year-old son, Atreus, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Shortly after the original team left over creative differences in October 2024, Ronald D. Moore signed on as executive producer and showrunner.

"There's so much material there, and I really responded to the characters," the Star Trek screenwriter and producer told IGN in July 2025. "The tone of the show is trying to emulate the tone of the game ... this heartfelt story of these two men setting out on this thing to honor the memory of his wife, Atreus’ mother."

Moore continued, "So it has this emotional heart, but there's this sense of history of who Kratos is, this mystery about his past, what he represents, the emotions that he's going through."

The question of who Kratos is was answered in January 2026, when Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst was cast in the lead role. Deadline reported that casting for Atreus and other iconic characters from the series was still underway.

Here's everything to know about Prime Video's God of War adaptation.

Though there are nearly 10 video games in the God of War franchise, the series will follow the two most recent: God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök (2022). According to the show's official logline, the series "follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye."

Throughout their adventure, "Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."

Ryan Hurst attends the Special Screening Of "The Walking Dead" Season 10 on September 23, 2019 in Hollywood, California.

Hurst is the only cast member confirmed so far — and he has a surprising connection to the video game series. The actor voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarök, which earned him a BAFTA nomination.

For those unfamiliar with the game franchise, Hurst's character is "Spartan by birth and a god by nature." Kratos was "raised in a martial culture" and commanded his land's armies until he made a deal with Ares, the Greek god of war: in exchange for his soul, he would always be victorius in battle.

Though Kratos will lead the show as he has the video game series, Moore told IGN that his son, Atreus, will also be a major part of the series. The role hasn't been cast yet, but the showrunner said they hope to "honor the game" and how his journey unfolded.

"I responded to the story of Kratos and his son," Moore explained, noting that their "epic journey" battling monsters was interesting, but it wasn't what drew him in. "I kept coming back to this story of father and son, and it was just emotional and it was different, and I hadn't seen anything like that before."
